Water Drum to Composter

Water Drum to Composter

We’re getting ready for spring around here and I thought I’d share an idea the hubby came up with a few years back for an easy, clean composter. First, take an old water drum. This one is 55 gallons and has a screwtop lid. Drill

Saturday Mornings

Saturday Mornings

I’m not usually a morning person, but weekends have me waking up early to feed my neighbor’s horses. What started as a chore has become a peaceful, almost zenlike approach to the day. I appreciate the intention it brings and any moment to connect with

Tahoe, Days 2 and 3

Tahoe, Days 2 and 3

After a day at Tahoe without much hiking, the next two days needed maximum mountain use. My dad and I went on a beautiful hike up to Dardanelles Lake.
I scrambled down some rocks to the water so I could get my feet wet. With no one around, it was easy to jump in without a swimsuit, even if you’re a modest Midwesterner like me.
Then I found a delicious piece of slab not too far off the ground, so I horsed around on that in my clumsy hiking boots.

Here’s a closer look.

The cypress trees around are enormous!

And the meadows are absolutely breathtaking.

Our reward after 7+ miles was a martini by the lake. Or two or three.

We set out early on our last day for a progressive drive home (we had multiple stops scheduled). On a back road off hwy 89, we took in this view.

My dad and I took a picture where we both look great. It’s kind of a big deal. (I usually only publish the ones where I look good, so this is a rare one for him.)

We hiked around Echo Lake.

This was my favorite house- I always pick the littlest one.

Will be back, Tahoe!

Birthday Weekend Picnic Baskets

Birthday Weekend Picnic Baskets

What a weekend! One of my bestie’s had a joint birthday/anniversary party, which turned into an impromptu weekend camping trip. Need inspiration for easy entertaining at your next big turnout? The culinary highlight was individual picnic baskets, to cut down on dishes. (She thinks of

Scavenger Cooking

Scavenger Cooking

Read my first and second post in this foraging frenzy to catch up! It’s time we took our bounty back to the kitchen to get some food in our bellies. On the menu- miner’s lettuce salad, sauteed fiddlehead ferns, local oyster po’ boy bruschetta, and

Summit Brewery

Summit Brewery

What trip to the Midwest would be complete without sampling some local brew? Ever the organization pro that she is, Mitch scheduled a tour of Summit brewery for her husband and me while she put in a few hours of work in the morning. We were sad to leave her behind, but happy to drink at 10:30 in the morning. To Summit Brewery we go!
These machines fill the kegs, a little over one per second.

This is the giant fridge where all the beer is stored. It’s about the size of a large barn, and they trusted us enough to let us wander around for a few minutes.

Can I have just a few extra minutes? Check on me in an hour.

The conveyer belt that leads to labels and packaging.

They don’t bottle during the tours, so we didn’t get the chance to do our Laverne and Shirley bit.

Our terrific volunteer tour guide, who said he works for beer.

The copper vats where every batch begins.

In the fermentation room.

In front of the mash vats.

On to tasting! My fave was the oatmeal stout, of course. (Do check out their website, it’s terrific! www.summitbrewing.com)

Prost!

Jucy Lucys

Jucy Lucys

And what exactly is a Jucy Lucy? I’m glad you asked. It’s probably one of the most genius burgers I’ve encountered in a long time, a specialty of the Twin Cities.  At Matt’s Bar in Minneapolis, hundreds if not thousands of these juicy gems get

Leftovers from the Bday Weekend

Leftovers from the Bday Weekend

The lovely weekend of celebrating continued with shopping at the local tourist traps and a party! First, the shopping. Right after a stop for tea. Striking a dorky pose in front of a hidden herb garden in Duncans Mills. Hours later, I stare down this,

A Hike Off Bohemian Highway

A Hike Off Bohemian Highway

This weekend, I took my first hike in over a month, and quite possibly my first real exercise since the fall. And all out of the sling! (It’s the little things.)
I packed some sandwiches and trail mix and hit the highway. Bohemian Highway. There’s a large plot of land being donated to the Sonoma Land Trust and a little bird told me there was a waterfall.
There was.

Here are some things I love: water, rocks, ferns, moss, the smell of churned earth and clean mud …

… and gnarly, twisted fairytale roots clinging for survival.

Here is me trying to get a shot from the top of the waterfall, but not daring to go any further.

My friend helped me out.

Then we raced sticks in the creek. Mine won half the time and the score will eventually need to be settled.

My dream house:

Yup, it’s kind of ugly here.

Kidding.

I changed my mind and decided I want to live here instead:

Gnome Doors

Gnome Doors

Last night, I had a little shindig called crafts n’ drafts. Just in the nick of time, I’ve been going stir crazy. Some special gals came over to work on those projects crammed in a corner (mending and finishing for me). We got to work
