What Happens When Besties Go to Bakeries Together

What Happens When Besties Go to Bakeries Together

One of the most important things for me to do right when I got to New York was go to City Bakery near Union Square. My old roomie and I were happy to share some sweets and a coffee together, only we are usually not

Fish tacos at Haab was one of the best treats while I was in Brooklyn.

Loved the decor, and even though I had a lengthy one-dish meal on my own, no one was rushing me.  Quite the opposite! They went out of their way to get me the internet password and rehydrate me with millions of water refills.

Look forward to going back next trip!

New York: day 3. And it just keeps getting more interesting …

Getting Back!

Getting Back!

I’ve been in a good mood this week. The days are longer, the world is warming up, and last but not least, my elbow is finally showing some signs of normalcy! Last night I went to yoga for the first time since my fall in

Baby Chicks!

Baby Chicks!

We were getting lonely at our house with only 14 animals- and a mere 10 chickens. So my roommate, Sugar, popped by the feed store and got four new baby chicks! We are rounding out the mix of girls with four new Americanas- they are multicolored beauties who lay green eggs.

Here they are at 2 days old.

They aren’t cute at all, are they?

The older girls are not as delighted with the newcomers as we are. Here’s one of the blondies, hootin’ and hollerin’ to let us know she’s displeased.

She’ll have to get used to it.

The chicks are staying in a dog crate under a heat lamp in the coop while the older girls get acclamated to them. But we just had to have some face time with them- keeping them tucked in our pockets or under our neck to keep them warm.

My other roomie, Crystal, just became an auntie of a beauty named Ida. We decided we’re going to name one of the chickies in her honor.

That’s Ida there in the front!

The daffodils are here, making it officially spring in Bodega!  Here’s to longer days and more sunshine.

My First Quilt- In the Works

My First Quilt- In the Works

Ever have a craft project you’ve been planning for months? How about years?  For me, the corduroy quilt has been in the making since high school, when a dear friend of mine made a duvet cover and an overnight bag out of mismatched corduroy pieces.

The Old Sewing Box

The Old Sewing Box

For most of my life, it seems I’ve been in a constant battle to organize my craft projects. This year, I made the goal to approach learning to sew on my grandmother’s machine, a terrifying prospect for many reasons. Particularly because it means opening the floodgates to even more demands for materials, tools and space to a hoarder-in-the-making.
Yes, it’s an actual fear of mine that I may one day be buried under my own craft projects if I don’t rein in my hobbies soon. Maybe whittle them down a bit. (Hey, whittling! That’s another thing I’ve always wanted to learn!)
I appreciate that my fairy godmother sought out a bona fide sewing box for me to use instead of stacking wicker baskets and shoe boxes full of random needles and thread. Consolidate, consolidate. I don’t like having multiples of things just to have multiples of things, but the essence of crafting requires having a stock of materials. Knowing where to find them is kind of a big deal.

And I really like that having this sewing box makes an official statement, like an academic’s regalia. Like, hey world, look out cause I’m a sewer now! Maybe I’m over thinking it.

So here’s my basic start into my sewing stock, and the work in progress for perfecting my craft room (of which there will be a post, just as soon as I can get it into presentable shape for the “after” portion of the before and after transformation!).

-pin cushions
-thread
-bobbins
-rotary cutter
-thimbles
-extra machine needles
-tracing pencils
-seam ripper
-seam gage
-extra machine light bulb
-good fabric-only scissors (these live on my machine table, since the moment I put them away, I immediately need them out again)

What’s in your craft basket?

What do you like to make?

In Defense of Blogging

There’s something that’s been eating at me all week. I’ll just let it all out, dear reader. Last week in my creative writing class, my teacher was discussing point of view. Since I write primarily in 1st person narrative and have a strong base for
